Pitts S-1D Rebuild #1
This is the first video in the Pitts S-1D rebuild series. I am completely restoring N120E which is a D model single seat Pitts biplane. It was originally built in 1965 and the last major update to the airplane was in 1995.
I didn't particularly want to start this project right now, but during that last condition inspection a few broken welds were found. I decided that instead of doing a half-ass repair I would fully restore the airplane. Follow along if you want to see this airplane being rebuilt.

When I first started painting, I would buy one paint gun after another hoping to get better results. If I saw someone on RUclips using a particular paint gun and getting great results, I would buy that same gun thinking I'd get the same results. I quickly found out that the paint gun has very little to do with the quality of your paint job. So, don't go chasing paint guns. Buy one, and learn ho...

Why Is It Taking So Long to Build This Airplane?

Why Is It Taking So Long to Build This Airplane?
As I do little things on my plane. You have set a new bar. Just doing the carpet isn’t enough. Now I am constructing all new trim pieces. I’ll take the flitz to my ignition next. I’ll need a second hangar soon. One flying plane and at least one project plane. Someone has to save these things.
Just a suggestion in place of sand or bead blasting the air frame look into, having it blasted with Walnut shells. It is less destructive then both sand and bead.
Just a thought, have you considered getting the welding done before bead blasting thereby eliminating the risk if getting the bead media in the frame.
God that Super Duty is Beautiful, and as an 82nd Airborne Veteran probably a similar scheme to what I would use. I just started my PPL training in a Cirrus SR20, I’m debating between STOL plane or something like TL stream that has more of a fighter feel. I guess time will steer me towards my mission. Late start in GA for me at 49, but I can finally afford it. Great Channel!
Was the builder's log migrated away from ZenithOwners? The page is not active anymore. Thanks!
That website was closed and the logs deleted.
Awesome to see! looking forward to more videos around the Pitts as I am currently rebuilding one here in NZ. I do like the idea of the fuel cap fairings!!!!
Soooo cool… thanks for sharing
G,day Mark from Sydney Australia. Has your paint booth enough mechanical ventilation to remove paint particles from the air? Do you wear a respirator? 🌏🇦🇺
Yes. If I just point the paint gun in the air and pull the trigger, the paint particles immediately turn and head for the exhaust fan. I do still wear a resp but about 2 minutes after I’m done painting a part I can go in the booth without it and barely smell anything. The booth works really well.
thanks for the video. The pitts is what brought me to your channel.
when using a white top coat you should use a buff primer , it take less paint to cover the undercoat saving weight on the air-frame and always looks a brighter white
are you going to get the Fuse frame Sand blasted so that you can verify that there are no more Cracks or breaks anywhere else?
Mark, are you going to use Plain steel or Stainless Steel for the fire Wall?
$1288 for a pair of sun visors? OUCH. I believe in quality products but come on. Are they made of gold?
Where are you getting $1,288 from??
@@KitplaneEnthusiast $644 each at Aircraft Spruce. Maybe a misprint
@@flyboybobio3431 Wow that’s a little crazy. When I got mine I believe they were $450 for both!
Like I said maybe it’s a misprint. $644 for a pair I’d believe.
put the hole down low because hot air rises from the floor up
This is epic! Any update on this plane? I want to know so much about it. Velocity should offer this as an option. I imagine it’s more efficient and definitely cheaper to overhaul and run.
We should have an update video this summer.
That LS3 sounds glorious
Hello sir please i want to contact directly
This was an excellent video! Thank you!
Wow. That’s amazing. I wish that I saw this about a month ago I am planning on doing that. Not sure if I will remove the bulkhead or try to do it with out removing it
Question, going back to the wings, am I seeing that right. 2 small bolts holding on each wing, I don't see any other attachments
I never liked the idea of switching the fuel on and off over and over at max. RPMs. Huge stresses to NO stresses on the system is never a good idea. Bill P.
I thought you changed your throttle to a center push knob release from the old turning friction lock a while ago. Yet it looks like you are back to the old throttle in this video? Did I miss something? Thanks for posting videos again we missed you!
What size cable did you use between the battery and relay?
I can't understand how the air entering the cowling will exit. if the baFFle is completely closed OFF with no way for the HOT AIR to scape.
Awesome video. I wish you would post your tip size and pressures and whether or not you reduced the primer. I am not a professional painter by any means but I love the 3. accu spray system.
This will give you time to build a relationship with a wing walker for the pitts…
And that’s how so many airplanes end up never flying again and end up in a estate sale with no lgs or history 😢
Your bonus tip been silently haunting me the last year, and I finally did it. Just got started. Well, working on the shop, and ordered my first kit from Vans.... Thanks for taking up space in my head, this better work out! ;-)
Please do not pull the covering. Just fix the problems and get her back in the air! Those issues are all common problems, and do not justify a teardown. Just my opinion.
Why weren’t these problems caught when you purchased it?
I would think you would be able to sell the Pitts for decent money in the condition it is in. There is some real junk out there for way too much money, stuff that has been sitting outside rotting for years. Your plane is nice, starting a rebuild on it would be fun. You will do the right thing for you!
I’ve been trying to sell it for two years with no luck.
@@KitplaneEnthusiastI feel your pain on this.
Why don't you sell it as is rather than having it sit around for an undetermined amount of time?
Sure I can do that too. Send me 35k and you can take it.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast let me ask my wife.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast If you sold it for something reasonable like 20k you'd be ahead of the game.
@@propertymanagement7011 What game? That engine alone is worth more than 20k.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast you have an engine core worth 12 grand.
Beautiful!!! Love being able to watch the build and first flight. I love the velocity and yours is brilliant! Best wishes for a lifetime accomplishment and will keep watching as you tweek, tune and further the dream. Outstanding I can only dream as I will never have the resources and budget so I will live it vicariously through yours! Best of luck. Congratulations!!
Please don't tear the covering off it. It will make it worth much less when you sell it.
How do you figure? Covering date is literally the first thing any potential buyer will ask about. A new cover job increases the value of the airplane
@@MotoFlightGuy because it's a lot easier to cut it off than to put it back. If it ends up getting recovered thats fantastic but I see S1 projects all the time that were taken apart with good intent and then never made it any further. Especially when the covering was in good nick to begin with ...
@@sailorlee15 it doesn't matter what condition it's in for his. After finding multiple issues with the previous work on the airframe, I'm sure that he wants to completely go over the entire airframe and inspect all of the welds and fabrication work. Chances are that if he found these issues, there may be more hiding. Removing the covering is the only way to do this correctly. Especially on an aerobatic airplane. Unfinished projects aren't specific to S1 pitts. It applies to all experimentals. People underestimate the money, time, and skills required to rebuild one. This guy however knows exactly what he's getting in to and has the videos to prove his skills in building aircraft.
@@MotoFlightGuy Time will tell. I hope you're right.
Jeered. Don’t confuse neglect with needed overhaul.
Well, I’m looking forward to the Pitts rebuild. 🎉
Well for what it's worth the pitts is what brought me to your channel.
Ooooo, this is going to be good! (For us!😂)
Yep. I will document it all on this channel!
This plane is the Pitts... (sorry, I had to)
So, are we back in business again🤔 I'm too old to fly or build any project you work on, but, I still enjoy the channel and should be included in what you think is your audience. Maybe your audience is actually bigger than your targeted market. A bigger audience makes for a more viable YT channel. It doesn't matter to me and I'll be here as long as you're producing content. I also intend to be on that first flight of the Super Duty. A while back I suggested you fly over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, over my house and back to Michigan over the lakes. It would still be a great flight. As to the Pitts, it looks like it could have let go at anytime. Just think how thankful it is to be alive and be able to put it in the skies again. Nice!
Oh man, not good news. How did it ever pass the last annual inspection?
Is the Pitts Throttle-bodied injection? No fuel rail for direct injection? Fuel return lines to the header tank?Interesting upgrade. No mixture or carb ice to worry about. Should be fun.
With mechanical fuel injection don't you still have the same mixture control? I thought that only went away on a full FADEC system like the UL Power.
I don't see any so it must be TBI. The 6 cylinder will need more fuel so I'm not sure if that can be adjusted.
I'm really sorry to hear that so many problems were found with your Pitts in the annual inspection. On the other hand, you were very lucky that nothing happened to you on the flight! In your last video you talked about a Kitfox with a relatively simple cockpit. Why not in the Pitts would fit well with a biplane.
That is a little scary. I have seen other vids lately of new builds with nuts that backed off as well. I believe one was an exhaust fitting like yours and the other was a fastener off of a valve cover. I like seeing these things in detail. It gets the neurons moving and makes you think about what you are looking at. At some point, I think that maintenance / inspection videos that do not pull punches are more important training than stick and rudder stuff. There are hundreds of videos on the web on how to flare and airplane, but almost none on how to spot a hairline crack that has progressed up to a fastener. Not that I was qualified to see something, but when I was very young and renting airplanes, I used a mirror to get sunlight into interior spaces. Nowadays with LED flashlights, the advantage won't be the same, but I was using 1940s tech flashlights with weak incandescent bulbs and carbon D cell batteries. Thanks for the update!!
I love your vids… thanks!
